- Have you or one of your family members visited the website of an organisation or individual claiming to offer independent and free advice about addiction treatment?
- Have you or one of your family members been contacted by an organisation or individual offering to negotiate your treatment costs?
Be aware! There is a very common, unethical practice of clinics paying to be recommended by referral agents.
- If you seek your addiction treatment through a referral agency you are unlikely to be offered some of the best treatment options available and may end up paying their commission fees.
- Some commission agents secretly have their own clinics and sell their own treatment services, while pretending to be “independent”.
- Referral agents can be stakeholders in clinics, at the same time as offering "independent" advice without this interest and bias being declared to the patient.
This practice is illegal in most U.S. states.
We wish to make our website users aware of this practice so that they can make properly informed decisions about their health.
