Expert: Maine Tops Nation in Prescription Drug-Related Arrests: "Maine leads the country in prescription drug-related personal and property crime, according to numbers released at an international symposium being held in Portland on the safe use and disposal of medicine.
One of the symposium's organizers, Dr. Stevan Gressitt, says that the numbers come from the National Drug Intelligence Center, which relies on reports from law enforcement agencies. Gressitt says records show that arrests involving prescription drugs far exceed cocaine, heroin, marijuana combined.
Part of the reason for Maine's high ranking, he says, is greater awareness in the state about the problems surrounding prescription drugs. Gressit says there are other factors as well.
'Arguably because we're older, and arguably because we're in occupations which are more prone to accidents, we may have a population that is receiving more painkillers,' Gressit says. 'And, as a result, the risk of dependency increases with your first prescription.'"
